What were they thinking?
It seemed like a crazy thing to do. Leave a cushy position in a large, growing church to move to an unfamiliar city called Durham to start a brand-new church? With no people? No money? No building?
Twenty-two years ago, Senior Pastor Dave Bowman and his wife, Sue, did something crazy. They packed up their daughter Heather, their furniture, and their dog and headed for Durham, North Carolina. God had given them the vision to plant a different kind of church, a place where people could begin a relationship with Jesus Christ and participate in authentic biblical community. In February of 1986, the first service was held-with a grand total of 35 people in attendance! It all started with no drums, no guitars, no drama, and no video, but in spite of that, the church grew-and changed. From loading equipment in and out of rented facilities to transforming school gyms into exciting environments for Christmas and Easter, over the years we slowly but surely discovered how to reach unchurched people in our community. On Easter 2004 the doors opened to our current home, where we could permanently and continuously push the envelope on creating environments for those far from God to move toward Him. Since 1986, our attendance has grown steadily, and recently explosively! Our current goal is to reach 2000 men, women, children, and students by the end of 2009. Why put a number on it? Because every number represents a transformed life, and that is why we exist. More than two decades since that crazy move, the vision is the same-well, maybe a little bigger: we will continue to allow God to use us, to transform this entire community through the E2 mission: Encounter God. Engage in Community.
We'd love for you to be a part of what God is doing through New Horizon Church. Ready to get involved?
